Mr Cook stood by his word all these years later when he realised his Powerball ticket with the jackpot winning numbers.
Tom Cook & Joe Feeney, friends who live in the Menomonie area of Wisconsin with their partners, made the promise back in 1992, saying they would always split any lottery winnings with each other, whoever bought the ticket.
‘When I checked the numbers I just froze on the spot and turned around to tell my wife and then she froze with the same shock.’ Cook went on to say that the 28 year-old promise he’d made to his best friend was also on the his mind, so once the news had settled in, the next thing to do was to ring Feeney and share the life changing news.
Repeating his words to Cook over and over when he’d received the call with the jackpot winning news, Feeney who is a avid fisherman said: ‘Are you jerkin’ my bobber?’ Cook insisted he was telling the truth, and said that he was honouring their pact saying, ‘A handshake’s a handshake.’
Feeney continued to explain that they had both been playing the US Powerball weekly ever since it started back in 1992 and that they’d made their split vow while dreaming of what they’d do with the cash in the initial excitement after the draw began.
With such an amazing amount of money the friends are both looking forward to a comfortable retirement, with Cook excited to spend as much time as he likes with his grandchildren and great grandchildren being able to share their good fortune with their families.
