UK National Lottery: Too hard to win?

THE number of UK National Lottery jackpot wins has plummeted since the new balls were added two years ago. The draw’s grand prize has been claimed just 39 times since the rule change.

Before the 10 extra balls were introduced, punters scooped the jackpot 61 times in just 12 months. Camelot increased the number of balls in each draw from 49 to 59 in October 2015. This was done to boost the chance of jackpots rolling over so punters could play for bigger prize pots. The move has backfired contributing in an 8.8% drop in ticket sales to £6.92billion during 2016/17.

Customers have turned their backs on the game seeming to prefer smaller but more regular jackpots. There has just been one jackpot winner so far this month while last month and July each served up 2 big winners.

So far this year (2017) there have been only 14 winners of the main prize.According to statisticians, the chance of matching all six balls to land a jackpot went down from one-in-14 million to one-in-45 million due to the rule change.

Players have reacted with fury giving the draw just one out of five stars at online review site Trustpilot.

UK National Lottery Camelot’s Response

One said: “Camelot have killed the main lottery with the extra numbers.” Camelot did not respond to approaches for a comment last night. But previously a spokesman said: “The National Lottery is paying out over 50% more in prizes than it was 10 years ago.”
